"Compete with a cause" is the name of the charity event organized by the Youth Parliament - Gabrovo on Saturday, June 24, on the lawn of Gradishte. The cause – helping the family of 16-year-old Vitomir Stanilov, who suffers from a germ cell tumor of the central nervous system.
At the end of August 2022, Vitomir experienced a visual impairment. It turns out that the problem is not in the eyes, but much more serious - a non-germinoma germ cell tumor of the CNS. Five chemotherapy treatments and 25 radiation treatments followed.
Consultations at an eye clinic are forthcoming to specify the tests for the treatment to be carried out for the optic nerves - partially damaged by the compression of the tumor. Before chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Vitomir was completely blind. He can see partially now.
Vitomir needs constant follow-up examinations and tests to monitor the growth of the tumor, which has now shrunk.
However, during his treatment, a health problem also appeared with his little sister Gabriela, 11 years old. For no apparent reason, in the middle of the month of December 2022, she complained of pain in her left thigh, which developed into lower back pain when walking and seating. Spondylolisthesis is detected at the L5-S1 level. Gabriela is directed to pediatric neurosurgery at the UMBAL "St. Ivan Rilski" for a very complex spine operation. The operation took place in the month of March 2023 and was successful. Control examinations and rehabilitation are forthcoming.
The parents of the two children are taking care of them, as they are currently in hospital, and the goal of the youth from the Youth Parliament is to help the family in this difficult period for them.
The Race for a Cause event will be held on Saturday, June 24, on the Gradishte lawn. The entrance fee is BGN 10 and gives access to 4 different zones - the "Sports" zone, the "Ecology" zone, the "Art" zone, the "Garage Sale" zone and the "Treasure Hunt" game.
It starts at 10:30 a.m. and begins with a bicycle race along a route from the Gradishte meadow to the Television Tower. It requires prior registration via a form, which you can find in the link or on the website of the Youth Center - Gabrovo - Race for a Cause (google.com). Cyclists must wear a helmet.
Followed by volleyball, folk ball, federball, tug-of-war. In the "Ecology" zone, those interested will be able to make "Chichko-Trevichko" and figurines from eggshells. The Art Zone is dedicated to origami and making decorations from glass jars, in the Garage Sale zone, everyone will be able to buy something from the bazaar prepared by the youth and add the amount to the donation boxes.
At 12:00 p.m., the "Treasure hunt" competition begins. It will take place along the Gradishte eco-path and the participants will have to go through a series of challenges to reach the final.
