Day of Japanese culture in Gabrovo: Calligraphy workshop with Venelina Petkova

Young people interested in Japanese culture and art will be able to participate in a calligraphy workshop during the Japanese Culture Day. The event is organized by the Youth Center - Gabrovo and is part of the youth exchange program with the Japanese city of Toyoake.

Ten Japanese youths will be visiting from July 20 to August 1 in Gabrovo, where they will live in Gabrovo families and will be able to touch the Bulgarian culture. During the event at the Hristo Tsokev Art Gallery, guests will be able to meet the Japanese youth, who will also do an origami workshop, as well as participate in an ikebana workshop.

The calligraphy workshop will be led by Venelina Petkova, with the rank of special kyu in Shodo from the Japanese ShoJinKai school. The event will begin with a demonstration where she will talk about the art of calligraphy and write the words 姉妹都市 (shi-mai to-shi), meaning “sister cities”, dedicated to the friendship of Gabrovo and Toyoake.

After the demonstration, during the workshop, participants will learn how to spell the word 思于退 (omoiyari) – compassion, empathy, consideration and kindness. Omoiyari is an important concept in Japanese culture that promotes respect and consideration for other people. Each participant will have the opportunity to experience the "brush dance" and immerse themselves in Japanese culture through a hands-on activity.

The workshop is free and does not require advance registration.

Come on July 22, 5:00 p.m., Hristo Tsokev Art Gallery, Day of Japanese Culture.
